Water Borne Diseases
Monsoons are here and that often means contaminated water supply. Globally, at least 1.7 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faces. An average person drinks 2.4 liters of water daily. Given that about 60% of our body is made of water, it is critical to ensure safe and pure water for ensuring our quality of life. Unsafe water can lead to stomach infections, diarrhea, fever, abdominal ache, vomiting and even death.
Following are some of water borne diseases commonly found in India and their symptoms:
Micro-organism | Disease | Symptoms |
---|---|---|
Echerichia coli / Coliform | Gastroenteritis / Urinary Tract infections | Watery Diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting. Can cause death in immunocompromised individuals, the very young, and the elderly due to dehydration from prolonged illness. |
Salmonella typhi | Typhoid | High fever, Diarrhoea / Constipation, muscle aches, fatigue. Symptoms progress to delirium, and the spleen and liver enlargement, if untreated causing death. |
Shigella | Shigellosis | Bloody or Mucus stools, Vomiting, Fever |
Vibrio cholerae | Cholera | Severe diarrhoea and dehydration. Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in healthy people. |
Vibrio parahaemolyticus | Gastroenteritis, Wound infections, Sepsis | Bloody stools, chills, confusion, delirium, nosebleeds, severe fatigue, weakness. |
Faecal streptococci / Enterococci | Bacterial pneumonia, ear infection, bacterial meningitis, intra-abdominal infection endocarditis, urinary tract infections etc. | Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chest pain, shortness of breath, Swelling of hands / legs etc. |
Legionella | Legionnaires' disease | Pneumonia, cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, fatigue muscle aches, headaches and diarrhoea |
