Drinking Water Quality Testing

Water quality testing is a broad description of the various methods used to analyze water quality. Various parameters are analyzed to monitor water quality to ensure water safety. Water testing is not limited to drinking water testing. It also plays an important role in testing domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater, packaged/natural mineral water, groundwater, etc.

The Importance of Water Quality Testing and Analysis for Drinking Water Safety

Our bodies comprise approximately 60% water, with two-thirds of the human body consisting of this vital resource. However, if the water we consume is contaminated, it can pose severe health risks. Water pollution leads to more than 3 million annual deaths, primarily due to diseases like diarrhea. To safeguard against bacterial and metal contaminants, it is crucial to conduct laboratory analysis of drinking water. Embracing the adage that prevention is better than cure, envision a scenario where water remains untested — a situation that could potentially harbor biological contaminants, posing significant health threats.

Types of Tests

Water testing can be grouped into three major categories.

  • Physical Tests For Water Quality

These indicate properties which are detectable by senses. Color, Turbidity, Odour and Taste, these parameters are grouped under physical tests.

  • Chemical Tests for Water Quality

These determine the amount of mineral and organic substances that affect the quality of water. pH, BOD, DO, Ca, Mg, Cl are some of the parameters which are grouped under chemical tests.

  • Bacteriological Tests for Water Quality

These indicate the presence of bacteria. Bacteriological tests are used primarily as an indicator of faecal contamination.

Parameters and standards of test quality of drinking water

Drinking water quality standards describe the quality parameters set for drinking water. Drinking water or drinking water is quite safe for human consumption. In most developed countries, the water supplied to households, business and industry meets drinking water quality standards, although only a very small proportion is actually consumed or used for food preparation. Typical uses (besides drinking) are toilet flushing, landscape flushing and irrigation. According to Indian Drinking Water Quality Standards :-
