Recreational Water Quality

Are you guests taking home more than happy memories?

Improperly managed swimming pools, spas and hot tubs can lead to Hot tub folliculitis, fungal, viral, and bacterial infections along with allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, xerosis, and swimming pool granuloma.

Choksi Laboratories Ltd. is a trusted quality partner to many successful hospitality brands across India. Both the Bureau of Indian Standards as well as World Health Organization have published guidelines for recreational waters.

As Per Guidelines

Bacteria

  • Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) (< 200cfu/mL)
  • Thermotolerant coliforms / E.coli (<1cfu/100mL)
  • Psuedomonas aeuginosa (<10cfu/100mL)
  • Legionella spp. (<1/100mL)
  • Staphylococcus aureus (<100/100mL)

Physico-chemical Parameters

  • pH
  • Turbidity (7.2 – 7.8)

Disinfectants

  • Bromine based disinfectants (<4mg/L in pools and <5mg/L in Hot-tubs)
  • Chlorine based disinfectants (1 – 5mg/L)

Frequency recommended by WHO:

  • Weekly for Disinfected public and heavily used pools
  • Monthly for Disinfected semi-public pools
NABL

Apart from the above, Bureau of Indian Standards has also published IS 3328 : 1993 QUALITY TOLERANCES FOR WATER FOR SWIMMING POOLS

IS: 3328 Test Parameters

Additional tests on-demand:

  • Diarrhea causing organisms: Swallowing pool water can cause gastroenteritis. Diarrhea can still occur after proper chlorination as some parasites (Cryptosporidium and Giardia) can survive in chlorinated water. Pseudomonas can cause bacterial urinary tract infections. Apart from these, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Shigella, E. coli / Coliforms, Vibrio cholera / parahaemolyticus, Enterococci spp. are also diarrhea causing organisms.
  • Hot-tub rash: is caused by the germ Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is commonly found in the environment.
  • Pneumonia: Legionella causes Legionnaires’ Disease causing Chest pain, Cough, Diarrhea, Fever, Headaches, Muscle aches, Nausea, Shortness of breath.
  • Red Eye / Skin: Test for Disinfection byproducts. Due to aggressive and constant disinfection, disinfectant byproducts may also be generated due to use of chlorine / bromine based disinfectants. Therefore, following additional parameters are required to be tested periodically to mitigate health risks.
    • Chloramines (Mono, di and trichloramines) – causes redness of eyes / skin rashes & respiratory problems
    • Trihalomethanes – Causes headaches, nausea, vomiting and long-term exposure is carcinogenic. THMs are the result of a reaction between the chlorine used for disinfecting tap water and natural organic matter in the water.
